All About Ants

In Ireland, the Black Ant is the most common. It is also known as the Garden Ant. And the Black Garden Ant.

Ants are social creatures. As such, they live in colonies. Colonies can hold up to half a million ants. They live by a hierarchy system. Consisting of Queens, Males, Larvae, and infertile females. These females are called “Worker Ants". Namely, as they do most of the work. The workers' source and gather food. Subsequently, returning it to the larvae and the Queen.

Ants nest outdoors. But they are not shy about heading indoors for food. Once they establish a food source, they lay a chemical trail. Thus alerting the colony to the location of the food. Ants follow this pheromone trail using their antennae. They march in their hundreds to gather the food. Back and forth the trail. Finally stopping, once it has depleted.

Black ants live from 4 to 7 years. However, the Queens can live up to 15 years. Mating takes place in July and August. Thousands of ants participate in mating flights. Once the young Queens have mated, they discard their wings. Immediately building their own nests to lay their eggs. Subsequently, starting their own colonies. This happens a couple of times per Summers. And we call it Flying Ant Day!

Are Ants Dangerous?

The species of ants in Ireland are not dangerous, just merely nuisances. Black ants are not thought to carry diseases. And they do not bite. Although they have a stinger, it is very small. Therefore, it cannot harm humans or pets.

But an ant infestation can be problematic. Firstly, ants travel far and wide in search of food. Even entering premises. Subsequently, crawling on countertops and cupboards. And finally, getting into the food. Which is very unhygienic and causes contamination.

Secondly, they are relentless. Once they find food, they alert the colony. Via a chemical pheromone. Which the ants follow from the colony to the food. It is easy to kill ants as you see them. But this will not solve your infestation. Once the trail has been established, more ants will come. Until you deal with the infestation at the source. Once you have ants in your house or business, you will need a professional ant pest control solution.

Dangerous Species of Ants:

*None of which are found in Ireland

  • An ants nest is a clear indication of an infestation. Spotting a nest can be hard. On the surface, they are quite small. Essentially, they are holes in the ground. Surrounded by small mounds of dirt.
  • Spotting a few ants in your house or business indicates a nearby nest. A small few ants scout for food. Once they find it, they alert the colony.
  • A large quantity of ants in your house, at your food, is the most obvious sign. At this point an infestation is undeniable. A professional ant pest control solution is needed at this point.

Thirdly, seal any cracks and crevices around your home. Ants can get in through small gaps. Caulk and weather-strip windows and doors to make sure they are sealed tight.

Fourthly, install screens on all windows and doors. This will help prevent ants from entering your home.
