We are continuing with our bird control methods series. Last time we discussed tension wire. Today, we are breaking down bird spikes as a deterrent solution.
What are bird spikes?
Bird spiking is popular bird control solution. Another name for bird spikes is anti-roosting spikes. Installing the spikes in places frequented by birds is an effective deterrent. As birds are unable to land on the spikes. The spikes consist of long, stainless steel, needle-like rods attached to a narrow base. The base is extremely flexible. Meaning they can easily conform into any shape. Therefore can fit on any ledge, railing or building.
What is the installation process for bird spikes?
Bird control spikes are relatively easy to install. Technicians simply cut the spike to the desired length and then screw or glue them into place.
Do the spikes hurt the birds?
Many customers worry that bird control spikes may hurt the birds as they attempt to land. However, this is not the case. The spikes are actually blunt. Therefore, preventing injury to birds. And even the technicians that install them. However, birds avoid the spikes anyway. Assuming they aren’t safe to land on. Additionally, the tight spacing of the needles means that birds aren’t able to land regardless.
Is this a cost-effective solution?
Spiking is a cost-effective solution in most cases. As they are easy to install. And as the spikes are stainless steel, they last years. However, it is not the most aesthetically pleasing solution. Therefore, we would not recommend spiking as a residential bird control solution.
Unfortunately, there are some cases in which spiking can become expensive. For example on flat roofs. Flat roofs have so much surface that it would get so expensive to spike it all. In this case, we recommend other solutions.
